During her time at Manchester Met Alice studied 'grotesque' imagery in architecture, fashion, periods of art, design and history. She describes her work as a 'mindful mess'
Alice smith loves to college and element of one era with something modern. She uses lots of old books and magazines and she looks through charity shops and car boot sales. Alice smith will begin a project by sketching out possible ideas for either a day or more if she has the time. She will go through her own resources cutting, drawing and scanning. It doesn't matter what she finds whether it's broken crockery, textiles or an ornament, if she feels it's right it will go in. If she doesn't feel this works, she will draw the patterns or shapes she needs. She is influenced by many things in a lot of areas such as art (Banksy, Hogarth, The surrealists and Ralph Steadman), Graphic design ( Stefan Sagmeister and Deanne Cheuk), Film (David Lynch, Peter Greenway), Fashion (Alexander Mcqueen and Erdem) As well as Music ( Arcade Fire, Aphex Twin and Bjork.)
When looking at her work it was instantly something that i fount appealing to look at, her images for the cover of 'Revenge of the mooncake vixen' was outstanding, her use of layers pulled off a really grotesque and appealing look to viewers. Using mixed media to also create difference through the layers.
